Born: Kanagawa, Japan, 1978. Lives and works in London, UK (since 2002)
Statement
I am a London-based Japanese artist who has a sociological background.
My paintings focus on combinations of colours and forms particularly linear and geometric shapes. Dealing with notions of beauty is a crucial aspect of the work.
The beauty is related to ideas of nature and colour and I am interested in exploring chance in painting: for example, allowing the paint to run down the surface of my paintings and its interaction with the texture and surface of the canvas occur naturally. The outcomes are always as surprising and as unpredictable as nature.
Recently I have started to work with circles. The result has become more complex, and layering is a key part of my work.
